Relatives Spouse, parents, children and siblings are strong clues. Family names do not match.
Funeral home Provides a first-party confirmation route. The provider serves an unexpected region.

How to Order a Pennsylvania Death Certificate

Pennsylvania Department of Health issues certified death certificates for deaths that occurred in Pennsylvania since 1906.

Choose the certificate type

With medical information

Includes cause and manner of death. This version may be needed for life insurance, pensions or family medical history.

Without medical information

Excludes medical details and is commonly used for bank, utility and property matters. Pennsylvania currently limits this version to deaths after 2019.

Current fees

Order Current cost Important note
Certified death certificate $20 each Fee applies to each certificate.
Online processing $10 service fee Added to online orders.
Mail $20 each Check or money order payable to β€œVITAL RECORDS.” Do not mail cash.
Online-order safety: Pennsylvania identifies VitalChek as its only authorized online vendor. Start from the official PA.gov page instead of searching for a certificate seller.

Who may apply?

Eligible applicants must generally be age 18 or older. Pennsylvania lists spouses, certain former spouses, parents, siblings, children, grandparents, grandchildren, estate representatives, attorneys and people with a documented direct financial interest, depending on the circumstances.

Before ordering: check your exact eligibility and ID requirements on the official page. Finding a public obituary does not automatically make someone eligible for a certified death certificate.

Microsteps before payment

1
Confirm the death occurred in Pennsylvania. Use the state where the death was registered.
2
Ask which certificate type is required. Check whether the requesting organization needs medical information.
3
Check applicant eligibility. Gather relationship or estate documentation when required.
4
Prepare valid identification. Check the current Pennsylvania ID rules.
5
Choose online, mail or in-person service. Use the route that fits your deadline.
6
Save the receipt and order details. Keep them until the certificate arrives and is checked.

Armed Forces fee waiver

Pennsylvania currently allows qualifying U.S. Armed Forces applicants to receive the certificate fee waiver in specific circumstances. The waiver is limited to 10 copies per applicant per calendar year. It does not cover the online service fee.

When You Need Probate or a Short Certificate

The Bucks County Register of Wills handles probate for a person who was legally domiciled in Bucks County at death.

First check: Bucks County specifically advises reviewing the death certificate to confirm that Bucks County was the deceased person’s county of residence before starting probate there.

What is a Short Certificate?

A Short Certificate identifies the court-appointed personal representative of the estate. Banks and other financial institutions commonly request it before releasing assets held only in the deceased person’s name.

1
Confirm Bucks County residence. Use the death certificate or other reliable residence documentation.
2
Locate the original will if one exists. Do not rely only on a photocopy unless the office tells you what process applies.
3
File the Petition for Grant of Letters. Bucks County currently allows online or in-person filing.
4
Prepare original documents. After an accepted e-filing, Bucks County requires original documents to be sent or delivered to the Doylestown office.
5
Complete the probate appointment. The county can conduct accepted e-file appointments by video call.
6
Order enough Short Certificates. A financial institution may request its own copy.

Wrong Obituary or Wrong Death Record?

Obituary correction

Contact the publisher or funeral home

  • Save the obituary URL.
  • Identify the exact incorrect text.
  • Prepare the correct wording.
  • Provide reliable documentation when requested.
  • Contact the organization controlling the notice.
Government record correction

Use Pennsylvania Vital Records

Changing an online obituary does not change a Pennsylvania death certificate. State record amendments use a separate process and supporting evidence requirements.

PA death-certificate correction instructions

If the error appears on RecentObituaries.info, use our corrections and updates page.

What If You Still Cannot Find the Obituary?

1
Search surname only. Remove uncertain middle names and dates.
2
Try maiden or former names. Include nicknames and initials.
3
Search another town. The funeral home or cemetery may be outside the residence town.
4
Search the funeral home directly. Its memorial may appear before a newspaper notice.
5
Use the Courier Times archive or Grundy Library. This is especially useful for older Lower Bucks deaths.
6
Switch to records when that is your real goal. If a bank or estate needs legal proof, order the death certificate instead of continuing to search obituary sites.
Not every death has a public obituary. A family may choose a private service, delayed notice or no public notice.

After You Find the Obituary

  • Save the obituary URL and funeral-home memorial.
  • Save service and cemetery addresses separately.
  • Recheck the funeral-home page before travelling.
  • Use only the family-authorized donation or flower route.
  • Order certified death records only when actually needed.
  • Keep probate, certificate and obituary-submission receipts.
  • Check veteran benefits before paying burial-related costs privately.
